Bachelor of Economy

The Bachelor of Economics (BE) offered by the Faculty of Economics and Management, UKM is the pioneer among economics programs in Malaysia that has produced many well-known and prominent economists in the country. This programme is designed to equip students with knowledge and skills in the field of economics that allows graduates to apply economics-related knowledge in organisational planning, policy development, research and decision making in organisations. Focus areas include international and industrial economics, monetary and fiscal economics, econometrics, economic development and Islamic economics. PROGRAMME SUMMARY

This program utilizes a multidisciplinary approach in research, writing and publication activities. The program is expected to fulfill holistic human resource needs, having knowledge and skills in specialized field and research which consequently able to drive the country toward developed nation. Four (4) main research areas offered are economics, accounting, management, and entrepreneurship. These four areas are further refined into several specialization areas to highlight UKM’s expert areas in research in line with the UKM Research University status.

Mode of Study: Research
Registration Status: Full Time & Part Time
Lectures: During weekdays and office hours (including part time)

A person who intends to apply for a master’s programme should have the following Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor’s Degree by obtaining a good Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) from a University or any institution of higher learning recognized by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) and/ or having accreditation recognized by a foreign Accreditation Body, or institution who has accreditation as prescribed by a programme;
    Doctor of Medicine degree or Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University or any institution of higher learning or an equivalent degree from any institutions of higher learning recognised by the Senate;
    any other qualification recognised by the Senate obtained through the Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL);
    fulfils other requirements prescribed by the programme (if applicable) and
    fulfils requirements of the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA)
    ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY REQUIREMENTS
  2. An international candidate is required to fulfill the English Language proficiency requirements as follows:
    • Obtained TOEFL (550), IELTS (6) or MUET (4) results which fulfil the score or minimum band requirements prescribed by the programme; or
    • For certain programmes, a candidate is required to sit for an English Proficiency Test, and if he/she fails to achieve the level specified by the programme, the candidate is required to attend and pass the English Proficiency Module, in a maximum period of two (2) semesters before he is allowed to register for the study programme. The candidate shall register as a Non Graduating Student.
  3. The Faculty/Institute may grant exemption to the requirements specified in subregulation (1) for the international candidate who:
    • has the academic qualifications obtained from any local universities recognized by the Senate; or
    • is originally from a country where English is the official language or he/she has the academic qualifications obtained from any higher learning institution which uses English as the medium of instruction

The candidate may be exempted from the requirements stated in subregulation (2), but the candidate shall sit for the English Proficiency Test (EPT) and if he/she fails to obtain the level specified by the programme, the candidate is required to attend and pass the English Proficiency Module (EPM).

Doctor of Philosophy

  • Master’s Degree from a University or any institution of higher learning recognized by the Senate; or
  • Other qualifications equivalent to a Degree or having other qualifications with experience recognized by the Senate; or
  • Candidates who are pursuing a full -time research mode Master’s program at the University and are recommended by the Graduate Studies Committee of theFaculty / Graduate Center to change status to a Doctoral Degree program with the approval of the Dean of the Faculty / Director of the Institute; and
  • Meet other requirements determined by the Faculty of Economics and Management, UKM from time to time.

English language requirements: The applicant must meet the English language requirements as stated in the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (Graduate Studies) Regulations i.e. must submit a result of at least TOEFL (550) or IELTS (6). International students who have the academic qualifications obtained from any local university approved by the Senate will be exempted from requirement but are required to take Cambridge English Placement Test (CEPT). Students who do not pass will need to take the HEET Training Programme.
